– Hello Claudio, welcome to My Photo Ideas. How are you?

Well thank you …. I’m happy to be here with you and happy for the opportunity that you give me to talk a bit about me and my work.

– You’re a photographer, but also are Illustrator, painter, cartoonist, collagist, journalist … how define your work?

All this and perhaps or surely also other again….All happens so casually… everything happens by magic…all flows naturally in myself, in my art…my art is a natural evolution of my being…I don’t plan anything….I don’t know if I’ll create illustrations or collages….or photos…it’s all a natural evolution of my artistic being… I started professionally this beautiful work back in 1995 … drawing only black and white with tons of black indian ink …. I drew and painted only in black and white for 13 years …. I love the black and the white …. and the many shades between the black and the white …they are like the 1000 shades of the human soul …. after so much black and white I needed to experiment with color and with everything I had on hand. …photos …. colors … many many different materials … in recent years I have done many, many photographs … I started photographing my installations ,my collages …. I started to experiment with my Nikon D40 … my style changes with me … I change with my style…my style changes with my changing moods … my tastes change with my photos ,with my collages … with the music that I listen ….

– For you, the illustration and painting are complement to photography. Why?

It is the same eye that looks at the world differently or they’re different eyes that look at the world in the same way or again it’s the world that looks at the same eyes in different ways at different times of life…I think that for me… and for each artist is difficult to distinguish his life from his art and it’s just this the matter …there is always a common thread in everything you do … in all your art ….it is impossible not to see it … there is always me/I/myself in my art of course … in my illustrations …. in my paintings … in my collages … in my photos ….it is a natural evolution of my being, of my artistic being ….I paint with my Nikon D40 as well as I paint with my brushes …it is the same thing… the same idea …they are the same emotions … the same thoughts

– How and when did you get in contact with the world of art?

Casually … back in 1995 ….. I do not know why and how…. a set of circumstances …. I was tired of so many things …. I was tired of myself …. I felt suffocated by the life I was doing and I needed something else … I needed to be really myself and to feel free … I needed of all that I wanted really and that I was missing …. art for me was all this …it is was my freedom …. it was a difficult choice … courageous …. I am very happy to have made this choice since 1995 …. I paint,I draw,I shoot photos,I create collages …. I create every day .. ..all the day …. I feel alive … I finally feel myself …it is a wonderful game that I invent every day … a wonderful shamanic dance … a world that always opens new worlds each time ….it is a way of communicating with myself always new, always unique…. to communicate with the world … with the wonderful people of the world.

– You’ve worked, and now you keep doing it, with numerous contemporary art magazines, literature and even comics, both on paper and on the web, in your country Italy and in the rest of the world. What has it meant for you all this diffusion and how it has affected your career?

I have always been very prolific ….. definitely because I like what I do … I like to experiment, to create,to draw, to shoot photos,…. and as I said before it is all born accidentally … one thing leads to another every day …. I never planned anything …. I always did everything that I was asked …becouse I like my work …. everything that I exposed … that I published. … sure …. it introduced me to the world …. and with the internet it is obviously much faster … and immediate

– In addition to publishing your work, you’ve also had the opportunity to show them in numerous galleries throughout the world. What has been the more distant or difficult place you had never imagined to be able to expose there?

Oh many years ago I’ve had a show in Japan…it was an adventure to get out of my works from Italy … very very hard …. really an adventure …. but I really like very much the adventure and the risk….
In the past I’ve done so much mail art … I love the mail art although today I make little…. and I liked mail art and I like mail art because it allows to break down all barriers that divide the countries and it’s an extraordinary way to share art and feelings and ideas … and to organize exhibitions and to show one’s art easily worldwide

– Break 2.2 Festival (previously called Break 21 Festival) is an international art festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia, presenting young emerging artists in urban art. This festival presents special guests (artists of world renown) with the objective of establishing an innovative dialogue with emerging young artists. In 1999, you were one of these guests at this prestigious festival. How was the experience?

Yes….in 1999 I was the only Italian artist to be invited to Ljubljana for the Break 21 festival … it was a wonderful experience …. from all the points of view …. I met talented artists and wonderful people in Ljubljana. … at that time I did a lot of very dark and twisted comics…. and I drew a lot and I published on many many magazines and zines of Eastern Europe …. I have wonderful memories of that period…. ….of the experiences done ,of the people met … there was a movement and an amazing cultural ferment in Slovenia, in Croatia … I reread often the zines of that period …they are really beautiful …. full of content …. full of life … full of great art ….

– You collaborate with many bands of industrial music, experimental, electronic, metal… What is your contribution to this type of music?

It depends…it can be to create a cover for a cd….a t-shirt,a poster or whatever for an artist,a band…..or I create art for a piece of music ,for an entire album….

– You have a new project in mind? What are your plans for the future?

I will always continue to do what I’ve done so far … to experiment ….to look … look around me,in myself, the world, the people… to study and always and again to study… to know and always learning from new places, people, sounds ….to work with new fantastic artists ….to do my interviews …to show my works on magazines, zines ….to create new t-shirts …,to create new tarot decks,to create covers for cds, books ….to photograph everything I see, I like ….to continue enjoying in everything I do….
At the moment I’m preparing two new shows for the next months…working on my new tarots deck…

– What advice would you give to someone who is starting in the world of art?

To have much patience, much courage, much strength, always to be yourself …. do not be afraid to make mistakes,do not be afraid of the criticisms ….to have fun and always to have fun ….to celebrate every moment of your life,of your his art ,of your being.

– Thank you Claudio for giving us this interview and closer to your fantastic work. We hope that you continue reaping many successes. Nice to meet you.
